Wader
A 26' 8" Flat-Bottom Cruiser
By William Atkin
A Simple Motor Cruiser
The world of boats is a complex matter. So varied are the wants of the individual, and there are so many individuals, that there is always a group of water-going men desiring a design offering the utmost in simplicity; the best that can be accomplished in accommodations; and very low cost. Then, too, the boat must be reasonably comfortable in rough water; have a good turn of speed; and powered with a motor of modest size. Wader has been designed with the above considerations in view. She is of nearly the simplest form -- flat-bottomed. Her entrance is sharp, and there is generous flare in her topsides. The stern transom is without crown; the sides perfectly straight to station 8, and abaft this carry very little tumble-home; and the bottom is flat, and with little fore and after curvature.

Wader is 26 feet, 8 inches in overall length; 26 feet in water line length; her breadth is 7 feet, 6 inches; her draft 1 foot, 5 inches. The freeboard at the bow is 3 feet, 5 inches, and at the stern 2 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Her name is Wader because she can move about easily in shallow water.

The profile shows a trunk cabin boat. A narrow water-way separates the house sides from the edge of the deck; wide enough to climb forward over while at anchor. The standing top covers the forward end of the cockpit, leaving the after seat open to the sun, a practice which has much to commend it. There is over 6 feet headroom under the standing top, and 5 feet headroom in the cabin. It is dangerous to raise the cabin top above the height shown, and, of course, impossible in a flat-bottomed hull to increase the headroom by adding to the draft. Headroom is very desirable but really not necessary. So long as there is comfortable seating headroom the cabin of a little boat can be snug and homelike.

The cabin is simply arranged for the comfort of two. Sink, work table, with lockers below, and alcohol stove are given 4 feet, 4 inches of the length amidship; the stove will rest on a built-in locker between the companion doorway and the toilet room. There is ample room below the sink in which to build a small ice box. Two built-in full length berths are provided. And there is a high locker for hanging coats, and other clothing. The space forward of the low bow bulkhead will be found useful for stowing anchor, lines, and other necessary gear.
Wader's cockpit is 7 feet, 7 inches long. There is a wide seat across the after end, and beneath this the gasoline tank. The capacity of the tank is 35 gallons. The motor shown in the plans is a small Utility Four developing 15 h.p. at about 1,400 r.p.m. The speed of the boat will be close to 9 miles an hour with a motor of approximately this power.
Plans for Wader are $100
