Barnegat
A 23' 2" Sedan Garvey
By William & John Atkin
A Sedan Garvey
The plans of Barnegat show a hull 23 feet 2 inches in over all length; the water line length is 18 feet 4 inches; the breadth 6 feet 10 inches; and the draft under the rudder shoe, 1 foot 5 inches. The freeboard at the bow is 2 feet 2 inches, the least freeboard 1 foot 10 inches, and the freeboard at the stern 1 foot 11 1/2 inches. It is a much larger hull than appears on paper, having wholesome depth. At the same time, because of its reasonable breadth and flat curving lines, this latest of the family will have excellent speed with modest power.
The arrangement has the characteristics of a sedan runabout. The deck house is 6 feet 6 inches long by 5 feet wide and is fitted with seats and steering arrangement. The cockpit is 6 feet 5 inches long. The headroom in the cabin house is nearly 4 feet 8 inches which is more than ample for comfortable sitting and moving about.
Barnegat, has deadrise in the sections forward of station 6; abaft this point the bottom athwartships is flat. All the sections are straight and in this respect rather easy to plank. Barnegat is an excellent type of boat for use in protected and reasonably smooth water. I would not advise going to sea in her, although I suppose if expertly handled these boats could take a dusting.

From the standpoint of easy construction the garvey hull form has the advantage of simplicity, its curves are all easy and from bottom to deck the building of a boat of this model is a straightforward piece of work. A steam box is not required for any part of the work. Furthermore because of the box-like form there will be very little waste of lumber in getting out the planks for bottom and sides, and for laying the decks. For those who favor water proof plywood for boat building the flat bottom and sides seem ideal surfaces to cover with this material.

I would not advise more power than will be developed by a cylinder displacement of 133 cubic inches, nor much less than this; or in other words, a motor of approximately 35 h.p. turning at 2,000 r.p.m. The weight of the motor should not exceed 600 pounds. The propeller should have a diameter of 12 inches and a pitch of 10 inches. The speed of Barnegat with the above power plant should be 15 miles an hour.

Plans for Barnegat are $100
